Main Post:
Which is preferred under what context?

Wine is an alcoholic drink made from grapes.
Booze is a slang word for any kind of alcoholic drink.

Booze is the motivation killer
Main Post:
As part of my mental health improvement, I started journaling daily about 2 years ago.
It felt odd to do as a late 30s Brit bloke (we're not meat to show emotions!), but it's really helped me realise that beer is my krytponite - it just strips away all my motivation for DAYS following a drinking sesh.
Right now I feel like I can't have any relationship with alcohol. And reading through my journal I've basically had and suppressed this thought for years!
I'm currently in month 4 of consistent, healthy behaviours, lost 37lbs since New Year. And a few days ago I had my first few beers of the year (only 2.5 pints, which is far far below my old intake).
I immediately came back from the pub and gobbled down 3 bowls of cereal, leftover pizza, then slept awfully before a long hungover following day.
Days later I'm still feeling the subsequent hangover; poor sleep; and the old habits of reaching for bad food or another few beers to feel better.
Britain has a famously terrible drinking culture that is deeply ingrained. Has anyone managed to find a good booze balance after weight loss?

As a fellow Brit I get this...! My tip is to find soft drinks you actually enjoy - for me, I love love love ginger beer! Or otherwise get a pint of beer/cider/whatever, but a pint of water at the same time and alternate... makes it last about longer!
My other tactic is to drive to the pub - that way no one questions why I’m drinking lime and soda 😅 I did this last night at after work drinks with my colleagues... and feel SO much better for it this morning

AITA for being pissed there was no Alcohol at a wedding
Main Post:
One of my (M35) best friends (M34) got married last week. He drinks alcohol and our friend group will meet up at breweries a few times a month to hang out. His fiance, now wife, does not drink. Its never been a part of her life.
My wife and I got a hotel room by the reception space and ubered to the wedding. The ceremony occurs, we go to whats supposed to be cocktail hour and there was just soda and water. No alcohol. This was not something we knew about ahead of time. There was a palpable buzz among our friend group at the lack of booze. A lot of us had spent money on a hotel room and ubering anticipating drinking. I'm kind of pissed.
Bride and Groom come to cocktail hour, everyone cheers, and when the bride and groom come mingle with us I ask where is the booze? His new wife chimes in saying her family does not drink and they were paying for the wedding, thus no alcohol. I tell them we should know that ahead of time. I say i wasted money on a hotel room and ubering. I would have just driven if i'd known or maybe not even had come. The bride does not take my commentary well and implies I might have a drinking problem (I don't, I only drink with my friends). The groom says I don't need to be such an asshole. I reiterate that I spent a bunch of money on something I didn't need, we all did. The brides pissed at me and asks me to leave.
My wife andI leave, but its clear I touched a nerve. In our group chat, friends were mixed on me saying something. My wife said I wasn't wrong, but my timing was wrong. So was i the asshole?

I was going to say N.A.H and then I read:

You said this to someone who is supposedly your best friend at his wedding? What is wrong with you? YTA. I hope he finds some better friends now!
Edited for the bot
What is the attraction to drinking alcohol/getting drunk?
Main Post:
I'm a sophomore in college (in the US and therefore under the drinking age), I've never had a drink before, and don't really plan on it. I see no real reason to drink, everybody seems to enjoy it, but I don't get it.
None of the drinks seem delicious (from smell and other people's impressions of them), and the adverse effects of alcohol (being drunk and the behavior that comes with it) don't help its case.
So can someone in the internets explain to me what's the big deal with this? As an outsider it seems like it's just an excuse to be able to do/say stupid things (whether you actually wanted to do/say those things or not).
I understand the social aspect (everybody's got a drink in hand, so obviously you should have one too), but that's not enough reason for me to break the law and drink.
so reddit, please explain this to me. why do people drink?
EDIT: I've gotten some stuff along the lines of "don't feel pressured to do something you don't want to." I really don't feel pressured to drink. My friends drink, and they offer me some when they drink, but they're decent enough to realize that I'm not gonna say yes anyway, so they don't press too hard.
(also part of edit) my friends are AWESOME, and I don't feel any pressure to fit in, and I don't feel like an "outcast." They just all drink, and most other kids drink, and I just want to understand why. From them, and from a greater audience (that would be you, reddit), and that is why I posed this question to you.

A lot of people drink to lessen social anxiety. I find it much easier to meet people and chat when I've had a few drinks. It gets me talking and loosens me up. As far as really getting drunk, it's lost it's appeal as I've gotten older.
Booze budget question

Hi again! I’m sure you’ve all struggled with the alcohol calculators online like I am now. June 2024 bride here who doesn’t want to deplete my bank account last minute, so I’m trying to get ahead of the game and slowly buy things. I have NO idea how much alcohol to buy. We have a weekend wedding, but I’m really only trying to get calculations for the big day. Any left over will go to the after party and whatnot. I have about 100 people and it’s very DIY. Think backyard level DIY only at a venue. We have a keg system as well. I’m looking to get beer/wine/liquor/mixers. We have a good mix of heavy and light drinkers. If anyone could share advice on what they did/bought I’d be super grateful!! Happy holidays y’all!

Do you need a liquor licence (you must have one where I live). All booze in the wedding must have a receipt to say where and when you bought it plus the liquor licence # that you applied for to have for your wedding.
